I agree with David's views. The best thing to do is do a superior job as an interviewer...make sure they know who you are, show initiative, volunteer to help when things are slow (if they ever are!).
After a while ask you supervisor for his/her review of your performance, then let them know of your desire to move up into the research end of things.
It will take time, but supervisors tend to appreciate an interviewer with potential.
