Regarding the order of the scale, I recently tested a 10 point Extremely Satisfied to Extremely /dissatisfied scale laid out on the page (mail questionnaire) in both directions.
That is, one half of sample saw satisfied on the left end, dissatisfied on the right. The other half had the order reversed. Those with satisfied on the left had an average score of 7.1. Those with dissatisfied on the left had an average of 6.8. The difference was not significant.
Incidentally, we are getting ready to test an "unbalanced" scale to try to get a better distribution across the points.
Herb, I like the notion of asking the dislike open end first. It seems so obvious now - why didn't I think of that.
