I've also thought in follow up. But the problem here, is that almost everyone will go with the "easy" approach; ask the contact(s) in the customer company. But they will not tell what you need, besides of limiting you to know only what's going on with your small share of the market.
Also, paraphrasing Fermi, when the research resulted only in a "measurement" confirming the hypothesis, you'll receive whistles and trumpets, but when it resulted in a "discovery" (telling that, what they expected or were doing was not right), hardly the customer will tell; "...due to this research, we avoid doing something stupid. Thank you for saving us $XXXXXX. Next time we will accept your first bid without a compliment..."
Maybe the only real way to do follow up will be in some sort of auditing, where a third party evaluates the research process, its output, its implementation and its final gains, if there where any. But then, if this is not a regular practice of every MR provider, total costs research will skyrocket.
