No offense taken. Actually it is not so odd. My tried and true "traditional" approach has already been rejected. If I am to stay in the game, and recover my investment, I need a new approach, or at least fully explore whether such an approach can be used with the current stage of development of on-line research. If I can accomodate them, I will. If I can't, or at least convince them to reconsider, then I am out of luck.

As to your second point, we are not a field service, though we do occassionally field some ideation and universe studies using our checks. Our primary role is to satisfy the information need by developing the most appropirate specification of discipline and method. In order to do this, you have to learn about every technique out there and how to integrate them into one cohesive picture (information infrastructure) so they make sense to the client and become actionable.

For this reason, I am always looking for new approaches (and revisiting old techniques), mostly on the data collection side, because when we find something that works, we include the research companies (or academics) who offer it, in our recommendation to the client, or send them an RFP if we also happen to be involved with administering the research. So, if anyone has found the "Holy Grail" it would be in both their and my best interest if they got in touch with me. To a degree, this is already happening. I have already recieved two e-mails from on-line research companies who claim to offer a solution, which I will start checking out this afternoon.

While it often does not come through in my posts, my strongest conviction is that of being "professionally clueless". As you get older, the battle to keep one's broad mind and narrow waist from changing places gets more difficult every day.
