why don't you research the relationship between statement of the problem and receipt of advice.
Test the percentage of constructive replies you get to such a question at several levels, for example
- Minimal information as above
- add your time constraint
- add your level of knowledge
- add the nature / level of the class
- add whether the "topic" is a project to be done, or a seminar presentaiton to be made, or an essay to be written.
Hypothesis: You'll get more suggestions if you provide more information.
