I routinely try to talk clients out of using screeners. They say but I'm only interested in such and such a type of person. How can they know that if they never collect data on other types of people to compare against.
Cost per R for other data collection methods can lead to sound reasoning for excluding people you have reason to believe might not contribute valuable information. With online research incremental costs for respondents are so low why bother excluding people -- you can always tab on the back-end.
When clients still insist on screening, I provide screened out willing participants with some duped questions so they feel like they've contributed and allow them to enter any drawings (of course incentives per respondent make this more difficult).
