When I'm screening someone for a group I usually say "Let me ask you a few questions to see if you fit into this" or words to that effect. This is a little more casual and "friendly" than saying "Let me screen you to see if you qualify". There's not a huge difference between the two but I think my version is a little better.
But the bottom line is this: if the potential participant has any idea of what a focus group is, and if they are of even slightly-below intelligence, they know exactly what you're doing. They know that you're trying to see if they fit into whatever tiny demographic you're looking for. But nevertheless, I still prefer not to use words like "screen", "screener" or "quota" when talking to them. It just doesn't sound right, and psychologically, it does seem just a timy bit demeening.
