I have looked at several models for demand forcasting in a variety of markets. I have also tested these in a consumer products market environment and found them to work fairly well in the models I have built. They are based on research done at Iowa State University a couple of decades ago and built around a standard 5 point buy scale - definitely, probably, might or might not, probably not, and definitely not. The weights we have found to be most accurate are respectively .58, .28, .10, .03, & .01. These demand weights assume TOM awareness and 100% distribution to the target market. Clearly one would factor more appropriate awareness and distribution numbers for a new product or line extension.
