It seems to me that anything beyond the 4p's is usually some silliness brought forward by academia.

The 4ps are a basic (and intentionally vague) concept, universal to all marketing. The others focus more on specific tactics that usually can be fit into one of the original 4ps.

The point here, when you get out of school and start to work in a specific marketing discipline, you'll find that you can add 3 or 4 of your own 'p's relevant to your job and your firm’s business model. You can, undoubtedly, always rely on the basic principles of the 4Ps.
