You're really buying the services of the individual moderator rather than the firm. So you might ask around -
also, people usually do more than one group-

but you're buying two components:
The facility (including recruiting)
and the moderator.
You don't have to use one source for both.

It's been a while since I bought these services separately rather than as part of a bigger project.
A freelance moderator might do a group for $800; two groups for less than $1600, since the planning and preparation time is really significant to the quality of the research. Or the price could be considerably higher. Depends on who you get. Also consider their travel time.

As for the facility - call around and ask what they run in your area; they're selling a service and won't make it a secret. Some facilities are bright, clean, new & shiny; some are pretty tacky. some focus groups are not done in a specialized facility - I gather that the first ones were done in people's living rooms. Remember recruiting cost will vary with how hard it is to find your target group, so be prepared to discuss that.
