There was an article about this in the September 27, 1999 issue of Marketing News (a publication of the AMA).
Overall in 1998, market research was a $4.9 billion industry.
Online market research: In 1996, revenues were $3.3 million; 1998 - $28.3 million; 1999 - $72.4 million (est.); 2000 - $170 million.
