I saw some research on golfing in the U.S. conducted by the PGA a few years ago (a 1994 study I think) that has probably been updated -- avg. number of rounds per year, number of frequent vs. occasional players, type of courses played on, etc. I believe there is also an association of golf course builders, managers or pros that you should be able to track down via a search.
