I wholeheartedly agree with what Michael says. If management does not take the process and information seriously. it undermines the entire project. And, if they don't follow through on issues raised by employees, any pre-research problems will only be exacerbated.
That said, I have had considerable success with a number of research methods: one-on-one interviews, focus groups, mail surveys and telephone surveys. You may also want to consider a Web-based survey.
Another part of the management commitment is to allow employees time off during the day (with pay)to attend one-on-one interviews or focus group discussion. Mail and telephone surveys are generally better done at home, to ensure more anonymity.
Bottom line: employee research can be very informative and helpful if the commitment to action is there.
