Gentlemen...
A couple of points.
First, it is all social scientific research. The basic methodology has remained unchanged since the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. In terms of US history, Thomas Jefferson was an early practitioner. It was Jefferson's position that social resarch should be applied as the basis by which this nation should be governed. If he had had his way, the constitution would be thrown out every 19 years and a new one drafted from a polling or convention of the emergent generation.
Second, intuition is not part of our job description. We measure for the sole purpose of taking the intuition and guesswork out of the equation. In fact, it is not our job to know anything at all except how to perform a measurement.
Finally, non-response is an error, it is not bias.
