Randy raises a good point. The data is not so much meaningless as it is biased and skewed to the point that relevance becomes suspect. It would fall into the category of a marketing ploy or feedback mechanism to measure reach for the banner ad.
I suspect, however, the agenda here is twofold. First, it would be reasonable for the marketer try to establish a correlation between fat substitutes and sugar substitutes, though there are better ways. Second, he is building a list with the free offer. Assuming he has some control data at his disposal, he could back-in to some reasonable relationships.
Just some thoughts.
